Undergraduate Audition Dates

for Fall 2024 Enrollment

  • Friday, January 19, 2024

  • Saturday, January 27, 2024

  • Saturday, February 3, 2024

GENERAL APPLICATION DETAILS

All students interested in majoring or minoring in music at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music must also apply and (ultimately) be accepted to the University of Georgia.

The UGA and School of Music application processes are entirely separate, and the UGA application must be initiated first. During the course of the UGA application process, the student will be issued an 9-digit UGA ID Number (sometimes referred to as an '810' or '811 Number') - once this number has been issued, the student may apply to the School of Music (the 9-digit UGA ID Number is required on the School of Music application).  Detailed application instructions for UGA and the School of Music can be found at the School of Music website here.

UNDERGRADUATE AUDITION DATES for FALL 2024 ENROLLMENT

There are three undergraduate audition dates for saxophone for Fall 2024 enrollment. Students must request a specific audition date on their School of Music application. Please note that other instruments may have different audition dates.

  • Friday, January 19, 2024

  • Saturday, January 27, 2024

  • Saturday, February 3, 2024

If none of these dates are possible, contact Marshall Williams, Director of Admissions of the School of Music at musicad@uga.edu to discuss alternative dates.

UNDERGRADUATE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS for SAXOPHONE

  • All 12 major scales and the chromatic scale played full-range. Be prepared to play scales all-slurred as well as in a slur two / tongue two articulation pattern.

  • Two contrasting etudes (one lyrical, one technical) from books such as Ferling, Berbiguier/Mule, J.L. Small, Labanchi, Voxman Selected Studies, or similar.

  • At least two contrasting movements from the classical saxophone repertoire – suggested works include the Sonatas by Paul Creston and Bernard Heiden, Tableaux de Provence by Paule Maurice, and Romance by William Grant Still – or a larger one-movement work, such as the Glazunov Concerto.

  • Sight-reading

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE AUDITION

The 15-minute audition determines a student's acceptance to the Hugh Hodgson School of Music and their potential music scholarship, so please be prepared to play at your highest level of musical and technical proficiency. Each student will perform the required audition material (see above) for approximately 10 minutes followed by a brief interview that allows the faculty to get to know each student a little better. This is also the time for students to ask questions. In addition to Dr. Quarles, there is typically one other woodwind faculty member present at the audition. Due to the number of students that audition for the saxophone studio each year, decisions about acceptance are not completed until after all formal audition dates have taken place.
