The best way to wrap up a year full of music is to share it with as many people as possible, which is what the MILK Quartet and Dr. Frigo did in May 2015 following finals week and graduation for three members of MILK.  After packing a university van full of instruments and luggage, the troupe drove across the state of Georgia for three days to play for middle and high school students. In an attempt to bring the students closer to the performance, the quartet stood in the middle of each room while the students sat in full circles surrounding them.  Each member of the quartet rotated one place to the left after each piece so the students had a different view and heard each saxophone differently depending on where they were sitting.  A true concert in the round!

Students asked questions throughout the performance, especially about how the quartet was making some of the unique sounds like slap tonguing, multiphonics and growling.   Also, MILK and Dr. Frigo took the opportunity to share with the students what it’s like to be a music major in college.

A big bulldawg “Thank You!” to the band directors that invited us, the students for their enthusiasm, the UGA Hodgson School of Music for funding support, and the quartet tour manager and MILK member Michael Turner for organizing every detail of the tour.  The schools visited were South Paulding High School (Douglasville), Troup County High School (LaGrange), Perry Middle School (Perry), Northside High School(Warner Robbins), and Central Carroll Middle and High Schools (Carrollton.)   The UGA studio looks forward to returning to these programs!
